Discovering Port Mahon
At the end of the harbour you will come across a huge fortress: La Mola. Built in the 19th century, it is now one of the most beautiful fortresses in Europe.
For beach lovers, only 4.5 km from Mahon is Sa Mesquida with its transparent sea, a true paradise.
It is pleasant to follow the stairs of Ses Voltes to leave the port and stroll through the shopping streets of Carrer Nou and Hannover. Mahon is a city full of markets such as the Tuesday night artisanal market and the traditional fish market, the Peix market, which is open almost every day. There you have the choice of local wines and tapas which are also nice to enjoy in one of the three beautiful parks in the city centre. The one in Plaza Bastion even has terraces where you can have a drink and taste the local gin whose traditional recipe dates back to 1750! For dessert, the best addresses are the bakeries of Es Llonguet and Sucreria Valles, which are full of specialties specific to the city such as pastissets or rubiols.
Port Mahon is also rich in culture since it was here that the first opera theatre in Spain, the Municipal Theatre of Mao, was built in 1829. It is possible to visit it as well as the Ca n'Oliver museum that traces the history of the city and if you want to have one of the most beautiful views of the island, go to the top of the building. Don't forget to pass by the Santa Maria church on the Plaza Constitucion as well as the City Hall housed in a beautiful building. Finally, if you are still here on September 9th you can attend the shows and horse races organised in honour of La Mare de Déu de la Gràcia, a religious festival celebrated since the 19th century.
Now it's your turn to visit by yourself the capital of Menorca island by renting one of our vacation villas.
